List of Sports Awards in India

Arjuna Award: It was instituted in the year 1961 as the highest national recognition of distinguished sports persons. The awardee is given a bronze statuette of Arjuna, a scroll, and a cash prize along with a monogram, a blazer and a tie. Some of the winners in this category are Soma Biswas and Anju B. george in atheletics, Pankaj Advani in billiards and snooker, Virender Shewag in cricket, and Samaresh Jung in shooting.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna: 
Launched from the year 1991-92 with the objective of honoring most outstanding sportspersons to enhance their general status and to give them great dignity and place of honour in society. Under this scheme, an amount of Rs. 1.00 lakh is given as award for the most spectacular and outstanding performance in the field of sports by an individual sportsperson or a team. Some of the recipients of this award are Pullela Gopi Chand in badminton, Dhanraj Pillay in hockey, and Sachin Tendulkar in cricket.

Dronacharya Award:
 Dronacharya Award was instituted in 1985 to honour eminent coaches who have done outstanding and meritorious 'work on consistent basis, to motivate them to dedicate themselves with a singularity of purpose for raising the standards of sportspersons to highest performance in international events and bring glory to the country.Some of the recipients of this award are Robert Bobby George in athletics, Machael Joseph Ferreira in billards and snookers, and Anoop Kumar in boxing.

Dhyan Chand Award for Life Time Achievement in Sports and Games: The award was initiated in 2002 and is named after the legendary Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand. It is India's highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games, given by the Government of India. Some of the recipients of this award are Hardayal Singh in hockey, Gurcharan Singh in boxing .
